Biography

Julian Chan, PhD CChem FRSC

Dr. Chan obtained his BS in Chemistry (2005) from the University of Illinois and his PhD in Organic Chemistry (2010) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was an MIT-DuPont Presidential Fellow. After finishing a postdoc at UC Berkeley (2010-2012), he joined IBM—Almaden in San Jose, CA as a scientist. His IBM research resulted in 5 U.S. patents, 19 papers, and 2 IBM invention awards.

From 2015-2020, Dr. Chan was a chemistry professor at the University of Ottawa in Canada, where he led a research group, secured competitive grants, and won the Ontario Early Researcher Award in 2019.

In 2021, Dr. Chan joined A*STAR in Singapore. Aside from being a P.I. (group leader), he was also a Manager in the institute’s Strategy & Development Division, and a Research Integrity Adviser (2022-2024).

After 10 years as research leader, Dr. Chan now manages a cross-border, multi-institutional, government-funded research program. He is currently seconded to NUS as a Senior Program Manager at an NRF-funded decarbonization initiative, where he coordinates efforts across academia, government, and global partners — including UC Berkeley, Cambridge, Imperial, Max Planck, and CNRS — to drive high-impact science.

In 2025, Dr. Chan was awarded Chartered Chemist (CChem) status and also admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC).
