Biography

Julian Chan, PhD CChem FRSC

Dr. Chan earned his BS Chemistry (2005) from the University of Illinois and his PhD in Organic Chemistry (2010) from MIT. After finishing a postdoc at UC Berkeley (2010-2012), he joined IBM—Almaden as a scientist. His IBM research resulted in five U.S. patents, 19 publications, and two IBM invention awards.

From 2015-2020, Dr. Chan was a chemistry professor at the University of Ottawa, where he led a research group, secured competitive grants, and won the 2019 Early Researcher Award. Dr. Chan has been an invited grant evaluator for several countries, e.g., Canada, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Singapore.

Dr. Chan joined A*STAR in 2021. Aside from being a research P.I., he was also a Manager in ISCE2’s Strategy & Development Division, and an A*STAR Research Integrity Adviser from 2022-2024.

In 2025, Dr. Chan was awarded the title of Chartered Chemist (CChem) and also admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC).
